Equine Assisted Psychotherapy
Equine assisted psychotherapy is a unique and experiential form of therapy that incorporates a mental health professional, an equine specialist, and horses. EAP can have profound impacts on individuals, families, couples, and groups and effectively address a variety of mental health challenges such as recovering from trauma or abuse, depression, anxiety, communication issues, attention deficit disorder, autism spectrum disorders, relationship challenges, and emotional and behavioral issues.
Equine Assisted Psychotherapy helps clients reconnect with their emotions, own their feelings, and become more aware of their body. Within the safe environment of therapy, clients have an opportunity to work through problems by creating external structures to work through with their horse, and gain immediate feedback about themselves through the horse. This helps clients see how their behaviors impact the self and others around them. Most activities are completed on the ground. No horseback riding or knowledge of the horse is required. For some clients, the movement aspect of riding and the sense of increased self efficacy and control can be beneficial. We may incorporate light riding activities on a case by case basis.
Equine assisted psychotherapy is a technique we use in therapy, it is not a form of therapy itself. Clients who seek psychotherapy services have the option of participating in equine sessions.
